Teacher DIY gift on a budget & Kid Friendly

There are so many ideas out there for DIY gifts for teachers of all grades. If you have a child  in elementary school like I do, then you know how I feel when she say's "I want to "make" something for my teachers". She likes the idea of saying "I did that!" Honestly I like that idea too!!! Although it is easy and convenient for us to go and purchase something already made, it's not always cost friendly when you have 3 or more teachers to give to. So I like taking the crafty way out of it.  Although at times I have spent more money on crafting supplies. Well now after a lot of trial and error I want to  give you pointers on where to find semi cheap materials but that don't look to cheap, right?

I am a huge fan of the Dollar Tree! They have so many cute items for a $1.00!

Recently I shared a awesome candy bouquet idea that I did for a friend of mine. The cost wayyyyyyy less than the average candy bouquet that you see at a grocery store retailing at $40.00-$60.00!

Well let's not delay...

Everything you see in this picture is what I purchased to make these "mini" Christmas candy bouquets for 3 teachers. Total cost of everything you see here was $16.00 plus tax. So if you divide that up, I spent less than $6.00 on each teacher.  I still had some material left over. What you don't see is the green curly ribbon I decided to use after the fact, to cover the green floral foam that is used to insert the bamboo skewers.

Remember at the top ^ of my post when I said this is a kid friendly project? Well check it out my 9 year old daughter made this with a little guidance but mostly by herself. Here she is below showing you step-by-step do it your self picture tutorial....

This was actually an afterthought when I realized I didn't have a card to place in it. I went with a index card, cut it and added the design to look like a sheet of writing paper.

                                            The card was perfect!

WELL HERE YOU HAVE IT

THE final product?!
Here she is super proud of her teacher appreciation gift!!

Main items needed:
  •  Bucket/Box of choice
  • Curly bows (3 pack) I only used one set per bouquet
  • Candy or single cookies of your choice
  • Bamboo Skewers
  • Pencils or your choice of decorations
  • Craft Sticks (optional)

7 Step Dollar Tree Candy Bouquet

I like to personalize my gifts and give them my own unique touch. When making someone special a gift I like to stay within a budget. Trust me it can add up!! I'm hoping that what I'm about to share with will make your gift giving a bit easier. Especially if you are like me and want give something that's unique and personal. This gift can be given to your BFF, coworker, boyfriend, husband, kid well I can name countless people, but you get the point.

This bouquet was fun and easy to make on a budget. Most of the items you see I bought at the Dollar Tree! YEEEESSSSS!! You read correctly the Dollar Tree. The cost of this bouquet was less than $12.00 total!! The best part was that I still had items left over to make a small version of this same bouquet.

If you have ever been to your local grocery store  you probably have already seen that they retail anywhere from $40.00 - $60.00 per bouquets. Why go retail when you can Do It Yourself!!! It only took me 30 minutes to put this together and it was a HIT!

1. Find a container for your base that will be stable enough for all the candy you will add.
( the container you see her is from the Dollar Tree the cost was $1.00) it's a sturdy card board material so it made for a perfect platform.

2. Insert a Styrofoam block inside the box, measure it with your container the Styrofoam block should fit snug in your container of choice. (I also was able to find one that fit this actual box perfectly fine) my Styrofoam was squared shape and if you notice by the picture the container is round. It was nice and snug, don't be afraid to place it in firmly.

3. Once you've decided on your candy choice, decorations (ex. Candles, ribbon, plastic figures I.e., happy birthday words) you can take wooden dowels or wooden skewers to hold your items upright. The way you attach them is simple, use clear preferably mailing tape (I also found the role of tape at the dollar tree for $1.00) It tends to hold better then your typical office tape. Make sure it's clear or you'll be able to see the tape wrapped around the sides of the candy (depending on the size of candy bar you decide to use only cut about a inch wide piece of tape). The candy should be placed at the top part of the wooden dowel/ skewer. If using a skewer make sure the pointy side is facing down so that you can push that side into the Styrofoam block easier. You can add anywhere from 20-30 pieces of candy if you are using the fun size bars. The regular size bars you would want to have a few amount maybe 6.

4. Once you have all your decorative pieces placed on the dowel/skewer then it's time to place them to your liking on the Styrofoam block that you already have inside your container. To make them appear in different height levels like you see on my picture all you have to do is cut the bottom of the wooden dowel/skewer (by using a small garden clipper/cutter). You can find them in the garden center of any department or craft store.

5. Now that you have all your candy, candles & decorative pieces (candy can also be bought at the dollar tree, they have a huge selection on name brand chocolates, I bought most of mine at Walmart same price) arranged on your Styrofoam block to your liking, you can add ribbon to some of the dowels/skewer underneath the candy or candles. I used the curly ribbon from the dollar tree gift package section, I pulled them apart and tied them individually underneath the candy and on the candles. CLEVER HUH?! (Cost of ribbon $1.00 for a set of two)

6. As you come to the end of your bouquet you'll notice the bottom of your arrangement looks bare, I bought some gift packing material - you know that crinkly stuff that looks fun and festive in your gift bags and baskets!) I stuffed it to cover the Styrofoam and the bottom of the wooden sticks from appearing so bare. (I also found these packages at the Dollar Tree for $1.00)

7. FINALLY! You can insert a balloon on a stick (optional) I did because it gave it a drastic birthday look and HECK it was $1.00 at the dollar tree!

THAT'S IT! There you have it in 7 easy steps...

Note: the tissue paper wasn't in the plan but I decided to add it because I didn't like the way the back of the bouquet looked and I wanted to cover the wooden sticks as much as possible. Again it's optional.

Materials Used:
  • Box - $1.00
  • Styrofoam Block - $1.00
  • Candy Bars pack of 6 - $1.00 each (used 3 kinds)
  • Skewers (already had these at home) Usually you can get a pack of 25 or more for a few dollars
  • Candles - $1.00
  • Ribbon - $1.00
  • Balloon - $1.00
  • Tissue Paper - $1.00
  • Happy Birthday Candle words - $1.00

Christmas Eve Idea!

How do you spend your Christmas Eve?? Here at The Chipkin Coop we love to be all cozied up on the couch watching a movie. The way we prepare is with a Christmas Eve Box! I usually prepare these for the kiddos in advance and place the box under the tree so that they can have something to look forward to on Christmas Eve.

Last year I added a Christmas mug and so this year I will be leaving that out since they LOVE the mugs they already received. This year, I am including a few families to my list and mailing out a package for their little ones. So that we can share the joy of what I call a NEW TRADITION!

Please share your feed back and add your pictures to my page on  Facebook I would love to see how you and your family love to spend your Christmas Eve!!!
Check mine out!! (BELOW)

Here is the Christmas Eve Box that I am doing for my friends & kids this year. Since some on my list are traveling by mail I have opted out on the glass mug so that the packaging does not contain anything breakable. Instead I added the bucket for the popcorn. These are traveling to the Seattle Washington area, Florida and one is going to Austin Texas. I cannot wait to get these to the friends that we hold closest to our hearts!

Fabric Doll #2

Using the same pattern from the original dolls in my previous post "Paper Dolls = Fabric Dolls" I decided to make my beautiful girl a OOAK ballerina doll. These Fabric Dolls are so fun to make, so worth the time invested.

Can you tell she loved it?!

Give me some feed back, let me know what you think??

Paper Doll = Fabric Doll

When my daughter made these paper dolls for me a light bulb went off in my head. My mind is always running with ideas. I thought how awesome would it be if I made these paper dolls into actual fabric dolls!  I love my daughters drawings and this for me was a great way to honor her art.

It took me about 4 hours for each doll. I used a pattern that I found on Pinterest from the web site www.makeit-loveit.com. My daughter was so surprised to see these fabric dolls and to see how similar they were to her drawings.
